West Bengal’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections increased in September 2026, with the state recording revenue of Rs 5,549 crore compared with Rs 5,229 crore in the corresponding month last year. The figures represent a year-on-year rise of around 6 percent, according to government data.
The increase comes against the backdrop of a broader rise in India’s GST collections. The country’s gross GST revenue climbed 14.7 percent year-on-year in September, reaching Rs 2,03,521 crore, compared with Rs 1,77,365 crore a year earlier. Domestic GST revenue rose 10.1 percent, while revenue from imports increased by nearly 26 percent.
West Bengal’s September collection growth was more moderate than that recorded by several major states. Maharashtra registered a 15 percent increase to Rs 29,986 crore, while Karnataka grew 16 percent to Rs 13,884 crore and Gujarat posted a 17 percent rise to Rs 12,222 crore. Uttar Pradesh recorded an 18 percent increase, taking its collection to Rs 8,882 crore.
The latest figures have drawn attention to the state’s revenue performance as governments continue to focus on tax compliance and collection efficiency. Higher GST receipts can provide additional resources for state finances, although monthly collections can be influenced by consumption patterns, business activity, imports and settlement mechanisms.
At the national level, net GST revenue after refunds rose 18.1 percent in September to Rs 1,76,520 crore. The figures underline the continued importance of GST collections to public finances and provide a snapshot of economic activity during the month.
