Air India Flight Plunged 300 Feet Midair as Investigators Identify Two Causes

An Air India Phuket-Delhi flight suddenly plunged around 300 feet while flying over Thailand, causing severe turbulence and injuring at least 14 people. Investigators are examining two major technical possibilities: a hydraulic system malfunction and a loss of connection with the aircraft’s autopilot system. The DGCA is also investigating whether there was any pilot-related issue, while the AAIB is examining the wider circumstances. Airbus and French aviation authorities could assist with the ongoing investigation.

An Air India flight travelling from Phuket to New Delhi suddenly descended around 300 feet midair, leaving at least 14 passengers and crew members injured. Investigators are examining the incident, with preliminary findings pointing to two possible technical causes.

According to reports citing sources, the Airbus A320 operating flight AI2379 may have experienced a malfunction in its hydraulic system. Investigators are also looking into a possible disconnection between the aircraft and its autopilot system.

The autopilot reportedly disengaged unexpectedly while the aircraft was in flight. The co-pilot then attempted to maintain the aircraft’s heading and altitude manually. However, further technical problems allegedly appeared, with cockpit displays indicating an issue involving the flight control system.

Hydraulic systems play a crucial role in controlling an aircraft’s movement and altitude. Investigators suspect that the hydraulic system may not have functioned properly during the incident.

The aircraft initially took off from Phuket without any reported problem. Some time later, passengers experienced sudden and severe shaking before the aircraft dropped approximately 300 feet. Initial speculation suggested that air turbulence might have caused the incident, but investigators are now examining additional possibilities.

Some media reports have also raised claims concerning the pilot’s alleged failure in a drug test. However, Air India has not officially confirmed any such information. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is separately examining whether there was any pilot-related negligence.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Airbus and France’s aviation authorities may also assist Indian investigators.

At least 14 people suffered injuries, including head injuries and damaged eardrums.
