The West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 is witnessing a significant political shift, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking a strong lead in the ongoing counting trends. According to the latest data, BJP is leading or ahead in around 198 seats out of the total 294, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 148.

In comparison, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is trailing with around 89 seats, while the Indian National Congress (INC) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) are limited to only a handful of constituencies.

Early vote share data indicates BJP securing approximately 45.41% of the votes, while TMC stands at around 40.80%. This gap in vote share has translated into a substantial lead in seat count for BJP, particularly in regions like North Bengal, Jangalmahal, and several border districts and also in South Bengal.

Political observers are increasingly describing this development as an “Ideological Homecoming,” especially in the context of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a prominent leader from Bengal and the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological predecessor of BJP.

If the current trends hold, this could mark the first time since Independence that a political formation rooted in his ideology forms the government in West Bengal adding historical and symbolic significance to the result.

The emerging trend suggests more than just a change in government, it indicates a potential shift in Bengal’s long-standing political landscape. The rise of a national party in a state historically dominated by regional forces could reshape future electoral dynamics.
