The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently announced the second phase of the Bharat 6G Mission, focusing on collaborative projects between industry giants, academic institutions, and international research bodies. This initiative builds upon earlier trials and technical evaluations carried out under the 6G Vision Document, which was unveiled by the Prime Minister in 2023. The mission outlines objectives such as spectrum reallocation, indigenous hardware design, advanced algorithm research, and secure communication protocols.
According to DoT officials, the new phase will prioritize terahertz communication, AI-driven network optimization, holographic transmission, satellite-integrated mobile broadband, and next-generation IoT frameworks. These technologies are expected to redefine the digital experience in sectors such as health, education, transport, security, and industry automation.
Telecom companies have also stepped forward, initiating advanced testing facilities, simulation labs, and 6G-capable network prototypes. Key players like Jio, Airtel, and BSNL are collaborating with global firms and research organizations from Japan, South Korea, Europe, and the United States. This global partnership is crucial to developing universally compatible standards and fostering innovation that can compete at the international level.
One of the most significant aspects of India’s 6G mission is the emphasis on indigenous innovation. The government aims to reduce dependency on foreign technology and encourage Indian startups to develop hardware components, chipsets, sensors, and AI-driven networking tools. Through the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and special R&D grants, startups and engineering institutes are receiving strong support to accelerate research and manufacturing.
Experts believe that 6G technology will be capable of offering speeds up to 100 times faster than 5G, enabling real-time extended reality (XR), autonomous mobility, immersive virtual workspaces, remote industrial robotics, and secure quantum communications. Educational institutions like IITs and NITs have already begun working on pilot modules for high-altitude platform systems (HAPS), multi-dimensional MIMO, and space-air-ground integrated networks.
Furthermore, India is planning to set up 6G Innovation Centers across major tech hubs such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Delhi. These centers will focus on skill development, advanced research, intellectual property generation, and cross-domain collaboration.
Industry analysts suggest that India’s aggressive push towards 6G will not only strengthen digital infrastructure but also create millions of new job opportunities in the fields of AI engineering, cybersecurity, satellite communication, and quantum technology.
