A brilliant career, a tragic fall, and thirteen years of agonizing silence. Harish Rana, once a promising Civil Engineering student at Chandigarh University, is now at the center of a grim legal battle—not for the right to live, but for the right to die with dignity.

The tragedy dates back to August 20, 2013, the day of Rakshabandhan. While the rest of the country celebrated the bond of siblings, Harish’s life took a devastating turn. He accidentally fell from the fifth floor of his rented accommodation. The fall resulted in severe spinal and traumatic brain injuries, leaving him a quadriplegic—completely paralyzed from the neck down.

For over a decade, Harish’s family has stood by him, fighting a battle that has stripped them of their savings, their property, and their hope. The financial toll of 24/7 nursing care and medical supplies has left them "nisswa" (destitute).

Harish is entirely bedridden, unable to perform even the most basic human functions without assistance.Watching a vibrant son wither away for 13 years has left his parents emotionally hollowed. The family has exhausted all resources, reaching a point where further treatment is a financial impossibility.

Seeing no light at the end of the tunnel and unable to witness his family’s ruin, the plea for mercy killing (Euthanasia) has been moved. The case highlights the "right to die with dignity" when life is reduced to a vegetative state.

Harish’s case brings back the haunting memories of Aruna Shanbaug and poses a difficult question to the judiciary: When medical science can keep a heart beating but cannot restore a life, what is the humane way out? As the case moves through the corridors of justice, Harish remains confined to his bed, waiting for a final release from his 13-year-old prison.
