WB: In a major pre-election push for West Bengal’s infrastructure, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit a massive new railway project. This announcement comes alongside a significant fund allocation for the long-awaited renovation of the Baskul Bridge, signaling a major overhaul of the region's transport network.

According to sources within the Railway Ministry, this ambitious project is designed to bridge the gap between urban centers and the hinterlands. The project spans approximately 192 kilometers, cutting across five districts across two neighboring states. It is estimated that 5,652 villages will gain direct or significantly improved access to the railway network, boosting local trade and mobility. The ministry has set a completion target of five to six years for the entire stretch.

One of the most significant takeaways from the Cabinet briefing was the dedicated budget for the Baskul Bridge renovation. The bridge, which has been in dire need of repair for years, is a critical artery for local traffic. The sanctioned funds are expected to facilitate modern engineering upgrades, ensuring safety and smoother transit for thousands of daily commuters. The project is being viewed as a catalyst for the regional economy.
As West Bengal gears up for elections, this multi-thousand crore investment is being seen as a strategic move to address long-standing infrastructure demands.
