Mumbai: India held their nerve to defeat England by seven runs in a thrilling ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, booking their place in the final against New Zealand.
Jacob Bethell produced a sensational century for England, but his heroic effort went in vain as India’s death bowling, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, sealed a narrow victory for the hosts.
After winning the toss, England chose to field first. India responded with a commanding batting display, posting a massive 253 for 7 in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson starred with a scintillating 89 off 42 balls, smashing seven sixes and eight fours to give India a flying start. The in-form opener continued his rich vein of form after his unbeaten 97 against the West Indies in the previous match.
Shivam Dube added further momentum with a quick 43 off 25 balls, hitting four sixes before being run out by Harry Brook’s direct hit. Hardik Pandya (27 off 12) and Tilak Varma (21 off 7) provided the late fireworks to push India past the 250 mark.
In reply, England mounted a strong chase led by Bethell’s brilliant century, keeping the contest alive till the final overs. However, disciplined death bowling from Bumrah and Pandya ensured England fell short, as India clinched a dramatic seven-run win to advance to the final.
