WB: Just as spring sets in, the skies over West Bengal are preparing for a wet spell. The Alipore Meteorological Department has warned of scattered rainfall across most districts of South Bengal starting this Sunday, with North Bengal also likely to experience showers.

This sudden change in weather is being driven by two simultaneous systems: a Western Disturbance currently positioned over Jammu and Kashmir, and a Cyclonic Circulation active over the areas adjacent to Bangladesh.

According to weather officials, the interaction between these two systems is expected to trigger the formation of cumulonimbus (thunder) clouds. This will lead to unstable atmospheric conditions, resulting in lightning and gusty winds alongside the rain.

South Bengal Forecast: The influence of the dual systems will be felt most significantly from Sunday (March 8) onwards. Most districts, including East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura, and Purulia, are likely to see scattered rain. By Monday, the intensity may spread to Hooghly, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia.
The capital city(Kolkata) is expected to remain mostly cloudy with a chance of light, patchy drizzles, providing temporary relief from the rising heat.

The northern part of the state will not be spared either. Darjeeling and Kalimpong are likely to experience consistent light to moderate rain over the next few days. Districts like Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar may see sporadic thundershowers as the moisture-laden winds move across the region.

While the rain might bring a brief respite, the Met office notes that there will be a significant increase in moisture levels, which might lead to "sticky" or muggy conditions before the rain starts. Minimum temperatures are expected to climb by 2°C – 3°C over the next 48 hours due to the cloud cover trapping heat.
