KOLKATA : Expressing severe displeasure over the unchecked growth of unauthorized buildings, the Calcutta High Court on Monday warned that it would not hesitate to deploy Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to tackle illegal constructions if the local administration fails to act.
Justice Amrita Sinha, presiding over a case regarding illegal structures in East Kolkata, lashed out at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for its perceived "inaction" and "lackadaisical" approach. The court noted that despite repeated orders, illegal buildings continue to mushroom in various pockets of the city.
"If the state machinery and the municipal authorities are unable to stop these illegalities, we will bring in Central Forces to ensure the law is upheld," Justice Sinha remarked during the hearing.
The court questioned how multi-story buildings are being erected without valid building plans right under the nose of the borough offices.Justice Sinha emphasized that the local police cannot remain silent spectators while illegal construction thrives. The Bench expressed particular concern over illegal fillings of water bodies in the East Kolkata Wetlands area to make way for unauthorized projects.
The High Court has directed the KMC Commissioner to submit a detailed report on the steps taken against specific unauthorized structures mentioned in the petition. The Justice hinted that if the "nexus" between promoters and local officials isn't broken, more stringent judicial interventions will follow.
