In a significant move to ensure structural safety, the Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge) will remain closed to all vehicular traffic for 12 consecutive hours tomorrow, Sunday (February 8th). The Kolkata Police issued a formal notification stating that the closure is mandatory for essential technical maintenance and cable testing.
Commuters should plan their travel according to the following window: Closure Starts: Sunday, 6:00 AM ,Closure Ends: Sunday, 6:00 PM .The shutdown is required for critical engineering work, including the inspection of stay-cables, bearings, and high-precision technical adjustments that cannot be performed while vehicles are on the bridge.
To prevent a total gridlock in the city, the Kolkata Traffic Police have implemented the following diversion strategy: All light motor vehicles traveling between Kolkata and Howrah will be diverted via Rabindra Setu (Howrah Bridge) through Hastings and Strand Road. Trucks and commercial carriers will be rerouted toward Nivedita Setu (Bally Bridge) or the Vivekananda Setu. Vehicles entering Kolkata via the Kona Expressway will be redirected toward Andul Road and subsequently toward the Howrah Bridge.
