In a move that has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the Pakistan national team will not take the field against arch-rivals India in the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup. The Prime Minister stated that this decision is a mark of solidarity with Bangladesh, following the latter's exclusion from the tournament.

The 2026 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, has been mired in controversy. Citing severe security concerns, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had refused to travel to India for their scheduled matches, requesting instead that their fixtures be moved to Sri Lanka. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected the proposal. Due to the BCB's inability to confirm participation under the current schedule, the ICC took the drastic step of removing Bangladesh from the tournament, replacing them with Scotland.

During a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad on Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif clarified Pakistan's stance:
"We have taken a principled and moral stand regarding the 2026 T20 World Cup. Pakistan will not play the scheduled match against India. While sports should remain separate from politics, we cannot ignore the unfair treatment of our brothers in Bangladesh. By excluding a major cricketing nation over legitimate security concerns, the spirit of the game has been compromised."
