In a statement that has sent shockwaves through global energy markets, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed today that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to halt India’s purchase of Russian oil. According to Trump, India will instead pivot to the United States to meet its massive energy demands.
Following the signing of a landmark trade deal between India and the U.S., President Trump took to the podium to announce a significant shift in India's foreign policy."Prime Minister Modi is a great friend of mine," Trump stated. "He has assured me that India will stop funding Russia’s energy sector. Moving forward, America will be India’s primary energy partner, providing the fuel they need at a fair price."
Since 2022, India has been one of the largest buyers of discounted Russian Urals, a move that previously drew criticism from Western powers but helped India keep its domestic inflation in check.
The reaction from Moscow was swift. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the notion of a rift between the two long-standing allies. In a press briefing, Russia maintained that:
The "special and privileged strategic partnership" between India and Russia remains unshaken. Moscow has received no official communication regarding a termination of existing oil contracts.
Russia remains confident that India will prioritize its own national energy security over external political pressure.
