India’s northern and southern extremities were jolted by moderate earthquakes in the early hours of Monday. Separate tremors were recorded in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), both quakes originated at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

At approximately 5:35 AM IST, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck North Kashmir, sending residents rushing out of their homes into the freezing morning air.The quake was centered in the Pattan area of Baramulla district, roughly 10 kilometers northeast of the popular tourist destination, Gulmarg. The tremors lasted for about 20 seconds and were felt strongly across Srinagar and neighboring districts. Local residents reported being woken up by the rattling of windows and ceiling fans.

Nearly two hours prior to the Kashmir quake, at 3:31 AM IST, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands experienced a magnitude 4.6 tremor. The seismic activity was concentrated around the Nicobar Island region. This region sits on a highly active fault line (Seismic Zone V), making it one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world.

As of the latest reports from local authorities, there have been no confirmed casualties or significant structural damages in either region. Disaster Management teams in Baramulla have begun conducting surveys in remote mountainous villages to ensure the safety of residents living in traditional mud-and-stone houses.
