A major tragedy was averted late last night in the picturesque town of Sonamarg, Jammu & Kashmir, as a massive avalanche struck a high-traffic zone. Despite the scale of the snowslide, officials have confirmed that all tourists in the vicinity escaped unhurt in what is being described as a "miraculous survival."
Following 48 hours of relentless heavy snowfall across the Kashmir Valley, a huge wall of snow came crashing down the mountain slopes near the Sonamarg tourist axis.
The force of the avalanche buried several stationary vehicles and blocked key stretches of the road.
Local authorities, along with the Border Roads Organization (BRO), swung into action immediately. Emergency teams worked through the night to ensure no individuals were trapped under the debris.
The Srinagar-Leh Highway remains closed for clear-out operations as machines work to remove several feet of accumulated snow.
The Divisional Administration has issued a High-Danger Avalanche Warning for the higher reaches of Ganderbal, Gulmarg, and Kupwara. Tourists are strictly advised to avoid venturing into trekking zones or steep slopes until the weather stabilizes.
